The Patriot-News Hershey Home

Discuss. Learn. Inform.

Superintendent Linda Brewer, board member Chris Barrett, business manager Steve Rineer and spokesman Dan Tredinnick sat down with myself, the Hummelstown Sun and Hershey Chronicle today to discuss the 2008-09 budget. I'll have a story in Tuesday's paper that will go into a bit more depth than you've likely seen before, unless you're one of the select few who actually attend the board meetings.

Unsurprisingly, expenditures are going up. The school says it's because of staffing needs, increased costs of fuel and food, health care, retirement benefits, etc.

What I'd like to hear from residents are some ideas on how to cut down on the expenditures. Maybe you've witnessed waste, programs that aren't working as well as they should, or took notice of something a neighboring school pulled off successfully.

As an example: Brewer said there will be a renewed focus on field trips next year, making sure that buses are full and that the trips are narrowly tied to the curriculum. But she stopped short of saying there will be fewer trips, or that the trips will be closer to home -- in fact, spokesman Dan Tredinnick told me that the district has budgeted for the same amount of gas next year.

So throw some ideas out here if you please. If some good ideas emerge, you could bring them with you to the meeting Tuesday night at 6 p.m. at the district office.
